Prof. Teresa Puig, awarded the James Wong award by the IEEE CSC, congratulations!

SUMAN group head, Teresa Puig has been awarded with the James Wong award for her continuous significant contributions to the technology of superconductor materials

The IEEE is the world’s largest technical professional organisation, bringing together more than 460,000 engineers, scientists, technologists and professionals from more than 160 countries who are dedicated to advancing technological innovation and excellence for the benefit of humanity. Among its members, less than 10% have been considered ‘Senior Members’, following a strict selection process based on their professional contributions and impact. Dr. Xavier Obradors has been selected as an IEEE Senior Member in 2024.

The IEEE Council of Superconductivity is responsible for covering all activities and programmes on the science and technology of superconductors and their applications, including materials in electronics, magnetism and power systems, in which the properties of superconductors play an essential role for the corresponding application. In the IEEE CSC are also represented the European Society of Applied Superconductivity (ESAS) and the Cryogenic and Superconductor Society of Japan (CSSJ).

The award, formerly known as the Award for Continuing and Significant Contributions in the Field of Applied Superconductivity (Materials), recognizes a living individual for a career of meritorious achievements and outstanding technical contributions in the field of applied superconductor materials technology, over a period of time (nominally more than twenty years) based on novel and innovative concepts and theories proposed by the individual, the authorship or co-authorship of many publications of major significance to the field of applied superconductor materials technology, and the impact that the candidate’s contributions have had on the development and maturing of applied superconductivity.

According to IEEE, he award has been given to Puig for her “Continuing and Significant Contributions to Applied Superconductor Materials Technology, and in particular for: pioneering scalable chemical solution deposition of REBCO coated conductors, enabling low-cost, high-performance superconductors, inventing the Transient Liquid Assisted Growth (TLAG) process, enabling ultrafast and industrially scalable HTS film growth and providing leadership in the integration of HTS technologies into large-scale scientific and industrial applications, bringing together leading coated conductor manufacturers worldwide.

The award recognizes a living individual for a career of meritorious achievements and outstanding technical contributions in the field of applied superconductor materials technology, over a period of time (nominally more than twenty years) based on novel and innovative concepts and theories proposed by the individual, the authorship or co-authorship of many publications of major significance to the field of applied superconductor materials technology, and the impact that the candidate’s contributions have had on the development and maturing of applied superconductivity.

Puig said about this award: “Receiving the Dr. James Wong International Award 2026 is an immense honor and a great personal and professional satisfaction. It is one of the most prestigious international distinctions in the field of materials for applied superconductivity, and it holds special significance because it recognizes a career spanning more than twenty years, marked by research, innovation, and the perseverance required to transform new scientific ideas into impactful technologies. At the same time, I consider this award a collective recognition of the work carried out over the years by the entire SUMAN group team, as well as by national and international collaborators who have contributed to making these advances possible. For me, this distinction reaffirms the importance of building strong teams with sufficient critical mass to compete at the highest international level, as well as the value of research guided by a long-term vision to generate impact in the development of the superconducting technologies of the future.

The award will be officiallit presented in the ASC 2026 Conference in Pittsburgh.
