Emma Ghiara has been awarded the IEEE Council on Superconductivity Graduate Fellowship

The fellowship is awarded annually to a full-time graduate student pursuing a PhD (or equivalent) degree in the area of applied superconductivity, at an accredited college or university of recognized standing worldwide.

The IEEE is the world’s largest technical professional organisation, bringing together more than 460,000 engineers, scientists, technologists and professionals from more than 160 countries who are dedicated to advancing technological innovation and excellence for the benefit of humanity.

The IEEE Council of Superconductivity is responsible for covering all activities and programmes on the science and technology of superconductors and their applications, including materials in electronics, magnetism and power systems, in which the properties of superconductors play an essential role for the corresponding application.

The award recipients are selected based upon the quality of their prior work, the impact of their current research, impact of their potential research in superconductivity and their financial need.

About receiving this award, Emma said: “I am deeply honored to receive the IEEE Council on Superconductivity Graduate Fellowship Award. As a Ph.D. candidate at ICMAB-CSIC, my research focuses on the development and optimization of REBCO high-temperature superconducting thin films using the novel Transient Liquid Assisted Growth process. By combining advanced deposition techniques, automated characterization, and data-driven approaches, I investigate how processing conditions and local composition influence the superconducting properties of these materials. The ultimate goal is to develop a scalable and cost-effective manufacturing route for REBCO superconductors and support their wider adoption in energy technologies and high-field magnet applications. This award is a great motivation to continue pursuing this research and is also a recognition of the collaborative and inspiring environment provided by my research group and institute. I am sincerely grateful to my supervisors, colleagues, and collaborators for their continuous support and guidance.

The awards will be given at ASC2026 in Pittsburgh
